Noise and pollution use different scopes

The official Tycoon blog explains the key distinction: homes are sensitive to noise, while pollution from vehicles, infrastructure and industries is recorded across the municipal area. A hub outside the visible town streets can therefore remain relevant to its Pollution rating.

First identify the rating you are trying to improve. Then open the corresponding data layer and the town window to establish the affected area. Do not use a quiet-looking residential street as evidence that the whole municipality has little pollution.

Find the source before rebuilding

The Statistics and Data Layers manual describes Noise as red areas with affected buildings highlighted, and Pollution as brown emissions and green absorption. These layers answer different questions.

Use the following inspection sequence:

  1. Select one town and write down its weak rating.
  2. View each environmental layer separately.
  3. List the facilities and services near the affected area.
  4. Choose one change to evaluate.
  5. Recheck both the environmental rating and passenger or cargo service after it has operated.

Keep a short before-and-after note. A relocation that makes the map look cleaner is not enough if it creates another service problem.

Reduce exposure without losing useful service

The layer manual suggests avoiding residential areas where possible, choosing lower-emission vehicles and maintaining them well. Compare the displayed characteristics of the actual vehicles available in your save rather than assuming that a later model is automatically the right replacement.

Moving a noisy station away from homes is a planning option. The developer also identifies its tradeoff: feeder services can increase travel time and maintenance costs. Check whether residents still have a practical way to reach the hub; the passenger guide explains the complete journey.

For pollution, evaluate whether a proposed facility is necessary and whether the existing one is used efficiently. Building extra capacity everywhere is not a verified remedy. Keep the city growth guide open when checking which rating currently limits your town.

What this guide does not prescribe

There is no tested safe distance, universal tree count or guaranteed cleanup layout in this guide. The official sources used here do not establish a single recipe that removes every town's environmental problem. Use the layer observations to choose a bounded change and compare its result in your save.
